We can know a lot about this sacrament by the different names that are used for it: The Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession, and the Sacrament of Penance.
Reconciliation involves the whole process of the sacrament. It begins with an awareness that one has sinned. Often this is revealed through a self-examination of conscience.
The penitent-one who is sorry and seeks to turn from sin-then Confesses his or her sin(s) to a priest.
The priest will then assign somePenance (prayer, work of mercy or act of service) that should be done as a sign of repentance.
After praying an "Act of Contrition" the priest acting in the person of Christ grants Absolution (the forgiveness and washing away of sin). The penitent can then go in the peace and assurance of God's love and mercy.
As one receives this sacrament she or he is
reconciled to God and Church.
Frequently asked Questions
What if it's been a long time since my last confession and I don't remember how to do it or all of my sins?
Just tell that to the Priest! He will help you. When absolution is granted,
all sins are forgiven even those that were truly forgotten.
What is "the Seal of Confession" ?
Anything that is said in confession is held in the strictsit confidence. A priest is not allowed to reveal anything told to him in confession. Aditionally, if anyone is
near enough to overhear someone else's confession, she or he is also bound by
the Seal of Confession.
